Methodology

How We Score Every Website Builder

Every builder on this site receives a single overall score out of 10, built from four weighted criteria applied identically across every review. We publish this weighting openly, rather than keeping it a black box, because a score you can't audit isn't worth trusting.

Templates & Design — 35%

This is the single largest factor in our formula because a template is usually the first thing that determines whether you'll actually enjoy building on a platform. We evaluate variety (how many genuinely distinct, modern-looking templates exist, not just color-swapped copies of the same layout), visual quality (do templates still look professional at default settings, before any customization), and — critically — how much real customization is possible before you hit a hard paywall or a rigid section you can't restructure. A builder with hundreds of templates that all look dated scores worse here than one with fewer templates that are genuinely well designed and flexible.

Ease of Use — 30%

A gorgeous template means little if getting a working site published takes a frustrating week of fighting the editor. We score ease of use by actually walking through the signup-to-published-site journey: how intuitive the drag-and-drop or block editor feels, how forgiving it is of accidental layout mistakes, whether adding a new page or section requires hunting through nested menus, and how steep the learning curve is for someone with no prior web design experience. Builders that get a novice from account creation to a live, presentable site in under an hour score meaningfully higher here than ones that require watching tutorial videos before anything makes sense.

SEO Tools — 20%

A beautiful site nobody can find in search results isn't doing its job. We test real control over meta titles and descriptions per page, clean and editable URL structures, redirect management, XML sitemap generation, image alt-text fields, and page speed out of the box. A platform that locks basic SEO fields behind its most expensive plan, or that generates bloated, slow-loading pages by default, scores lower here regardless of how nice its templates look.

Price & Support — 15%

Price alone isn't the whole story, which is why we score it together with support quality. We look at whether pricing tiers are transparent and predictable, whether a genuinely usable free plan or trial exists, and — just as important — what happens when we actually contact support with a real problem: response time, whether the person helping actually understands the platform, and whether help is gated behind the highest-priced tier. A cheaper builder with fast, knowledgeable support can outscore a pricier one with a slow, scripted support queue.

Qualitative Factors We Weigh Beyond the Score

Some things resist a clean numeric score but still shape the written verdict on each review: how deep eCommerce features actually go beyond a basic "add to cart" button, how the platform performs on mobile both for visitors and for the person editing the site from a phone, and how seriously the platform treats security basics like SSL and regular backups. These factors don't move the numeric score directly, but they're always discussed in the review text, since they can matter enormously depending on what you're actually building.

Review Update Policy

We don't test a builder once and leave the score frozen indefinitely. We re-test continuously throughout the year and refresh a score whenever a builder ships a major editor redesign, a pricing change, or a meaningful template library refresh. Fast-moving platforms get revisited more often than slower-moving ones, and every review page reflects the date of its most recent update.

Why Independent Testing Matters Here

The website-builder comparison space is full of sites that either republish vendor marketing copy verbatim or rank builders purely by which one pays the highest affiliate commission. We think that's a disservice to anyone about to commit real time and money to building a site. Every score here reflects genuine hands-on building, and we'd rather publish a smaller number of thoroughly tested builders than a sprawling list padded with platforms nobody on our team has actually used.

What This Methodology Doesn't Capture

No formula perfectly captures whether a specific builder's editor will click with your particular design sensibility or technical comfort level. Our scores are a strong, consistent starting point for comparing builders objectively, but we'd still encourage reading the full written review for any platform you're seriously considering — that's where nuance the numbers can't carry, like how a specific template actually handles real content or how a particular support team has responded to real tickets, gets explained in full.
